My Plein Aire painting is mostly Pastels, but can occasionally be watercolours, or simply pen sketches. Plein Aire (PA) for me is an exercise in fear and frustration, trying to get the scene down as the light changes or my eyes perceive it. Proportion, light and value are still a mystery for me, but I keep trying.
Most of the PA works are smaller pieces, 9×5 inch, 20×30 cm or even ATC format. The size helps me keep focussed on proportion and the main features. I have learnt that not all papers work for PA, for me, the surface needs to grip the pastel quickly and allow at least some layering to achieve the blended but bright colours of the pastel. But – I am a learnatic, with limited experience and training.
